Nowadays, most ornithologists have their smartphones close at hand. With that fact in mind, DOF/BirdLife Denmark has now developed an app that can be downloaded and used to enter the birds you see and hear at a point count while in the field. In other words, there is no homework waiting to submit or enter one's observations; it's all done straight out there, so to speak.
The app should be used to create and count new routes so that more areas of Denmark are covered by the Danish Point Count Scheme that monitors the common breeding and wintering bird species. In the app, it is possible to create a route while making your first count, but the route can also be prepared from home before making the point count. New and experienced point counters are invited to use the app for point counting, but it must primarily be used for new routes.
The app can also benefit experienced Danish point counters, some of whom have been counting for nearly 50 years. If they, e.g. use a notebook for their counts at their existing routes, they can easily enter the day’s observations in the app afterwards from home on a mobile phone or computer.
